How to Meditate Better

By Richard E Sherman

Some Eastern Buddhists have sizable reservations about their Western counterparts. This is surprising to many, in light of all the favorable press Buddhism has received. Haven’t countless people found calm in this hectic world through meditation? Buddhists desire world peace and compassion for all people, and they want to take an open stand for nonviolence. Buddhism is exotic and inviting. It shuns the violent, materialistic culture of the West. It offers the opportunity to tailor a unique path to becoming a better person, and, ultimately, to attaining enlightenment. Why would the Dalai Lama be hesitant about urging Westerners to become Buddhists?

Beginning with watered down Buddhism is easy. You choose the kind of meditation that feels good to you, and you select what you will meditate on. However, converting to Buddhism isn’t just about beginning. It’s about going deep into meditation and sustaining that depth….for a lifetime.

Many elements of Buddhism strongly attract people in the West. Elements of Buddhism very similar to Judeo-Christian teachings resonate with them. However, after delving more deeply, Westerners encounter some of Buddhism’s distinctly Eastern elements and often balk, selectively. They pick and choose what they will practice and what they will ignore. Yet this cafeteria-style approach to spirituality may not work well. Many Western Buddha-seekers end up homeless-alienated from the Western traditions in which they were raised, and yet unwilling to adopt the Eastern ways of Buddhism sufficiently.

Warnings from the Dalai Lama

Patrick French, the author of Tibet, Tibet, noted: “I was… cautioned by the Dalai Lama’s own refusal to proselytize. After long observation, he had decided that conversion usually led to confusion, and that without the support of the prevailing culture, it was hard to maintain your spiritual practice.”

The Dalai Lama did elaborate on his precautions. He said, “Westerners who proceed too quickly to deep meditation should learn more about Eastern traditions and get better training than they usually do. Otherwise, certain physical or mental difficulties appear.”

Difficulties? What difficulties? Lorin Roche, Ph.D., a meditation advocate who has specialized over the past three-plus decades in counseling people who have encountered problems after engaging in prolonged, intensive meditation, has noted some of these. They include depression, a feeling of being lost, trouble adapting to life in the city, finding it hard to be intimate with another person, weird health problems and panic attacks. Westerners have much higher expectations for happiness in this world, so there is a much greater sense of loss when someone commits to retreat from this world for a real stretch of time.

Dr. Roche teaches a form of meditation he believes avoids these problems. Just keep it simple, brief and consistent. Perhaps Buddhism is like a pain killer to Westerners. Taking a few tablets can do a lot of good, but swallowing a handful of pills and you better get your stomach pumped.

Dr. Roche does not see any need to convert to Buddhism or Hinduism to meditate more effectively. Most other major religions have long traditions in meditative practices. There is much that Westerners can learn about meditation from Buddhism…in order to strengthen their practice of their own particular form of Western religion. So why not leave it at that? Actually converting to Buddhism is a much more serious and mentally traumatic thing for Westerners to do than is commonly appreciated.

You may doubt that the Dalai Lama said the things quoted above. After all, hasn’t he spent decades traveling the globe as the world’s most visible Buddhist? While this is certainly true, what is not often fully appreciated is that one of his chief objectives has been to serve as a rallying point for the cause of the liberation of Tibet. Portraying Buddhism in the most positive light possible aids him in furthering the cause of the autonomy and welfare of the Tibetan people, for whom he has served as “the temporal and the spiritual leader” for more than half a century.

We all have much to learn. Imagine Jesus giving a warning to American Christians similar to the Dalai Lama’s precautions. He might say, “In the West, I do not think it advisable to follow Christianity-if that means subordinate my teachings to the base parts of Western culture.” And he would be dead on.

A graduate of UC San Diego (BA and MA), R. E. Sherman was a principal with PricewaterhouseCoopers and an expert witness in many major cases. He has authored 10 professional papers, including two national prize winners, 70 articles in a national trade publication and a book (10,000 copies sold). He has been a student of comparative religion for 40 years.

In this book he has tried to present each religion objectively and (whenever possible) positively, honoring the literal claims of its followers.

For the past decade Mr. Sherman has worked with an Israeli physicist in examining claims about codes in the Hebrew Bible. He authored a book on their findings, Bible Code Bombshell (New Leaf Press, 2005), which has sold 10,000 copies.

Remaining Healthy, Happy and Positive During “Testing Times”

By

There are periods in the life of every person when certain events and situations demand greater inner strength, courage, faith, stamina, energy, understanding, optimism, inner security, and self-confidence. It could be a personal illness or the illness of a loved one. We might lose our job or savings. Another possibility is that we may need to work many more hours just to survive.

We may lose a limb or an important bodily organ. A loved one may be going through a psychological crisis and behave in irrational ways. We may have just found out that our spouse is cheating on us or that our child is taking drugs and/or is very unhappy. War, floods, fires, earthquakes, and other natural disasters are all “testing times.” And the most intense for us all is the loss of a loved one.

It is very natural for us to feel concerned about our future when we see the economy struggling, people getting laid off, basic needs not being met, and anger building up in many sectors of society. You, as many others, might naturally be feeling pain, fear, anxiety, betrayal, anger and even hate towards those you believe are responsible for what has happened and is happening.

These emotions, however, do not help us deal with such situations effectively. They disrupt and weaken our nervous, endocrine and immune systems compromising our health, vitality, clarity and ability to deal effectively with life’s pressures and demands.

Additionally, negative feelings attract to us – through the law of attraction and manifestation – even more of what we are feeling negative about. We energize and attract realities by fearing them or holding strong emotions towards them.

During “testing times” we need to be very much in touch with our inner power, so as to maintain our health, happiness, peace and love. This is an opportune time to develop our inner wisdom, strength and guidance.

We will benefit greatly be letting go of our fears and other negative emotions and perceiving this as an opportunity to become stronger, fearless and more effective in creating our desired reality. It is an opportunity to let go of old limiting beliefs, emotions and values and move forward in our emotional, mental, social, and spiritual development.

We have much to learn and much to gain by dealing positively with what is happening.

We are still among the lucky and blessed

At this time, 5 billion people (80%) on this planet live and have been living all of their lives and will continue to live on less than $ 10 a day, which is $ 300 a month.

3 billion of these people have been living and will be living on less than $ 2.50 a day ($ 75 a month) and 1.4 billion on only $ 37 a month.

The above statement in no way means that we should lower our standard of living. But, we need to realize that these fellow souls are very likely not any less happy than you and I. They may even have less anxiety as they have very little to actually lose. They love and are loved by their families, they do things to gain their meager living, they eat simple foods, they rest, and they enjoy their free time in simple ways with family and friends. They do not cry all day. They probably laugh and smile as much as any of us.

Have this in mind as we now explore ways in which you can maintain your health, happiness and abundance during these “testing times.”

We are listing here just a few of the methods to be learned and will explain them in greater detail in future articles or you can go to

1. Learn to care for your body and strengthen your mind so that you are able to deal more effectively with life’s challenges.

2. Cultivating Positive Thoughts and Feelings will attract more positive realities.

3. Learn “Energy Psychology” for getting free from fear, anxiety and other negative emotions.

4. Learn the “Twelve Step Manifestation Process”.

5. Learn “Ho’oponopono” and how to transform our reality by purifying ourselves.

6. Live in the present, free from the limitations of the past the fear of the future.

7. Let go of negative emotions with the specific methods.

8. Cultivate feelings of Gratitude for all that you have.

9. Increase and balance your energy.

10. Develop the ability to think more creatively – out of the box – with alternative and more inspired solutions.

11. Become a «Light Worker» and help others through their difficulties.

12. Develop a philosophical perception of life that enables you to inner peace whatever might happen.

Meditation Techniques

By

Meditation is a technique invented by ancient Indian sages who practiced meditation in order to find peace. It is a very useful technique to relieve stress of your day to day life and it has increasingly become popular all over the world as people are often stressed out and they need ways to reduce the stress and that is why they are opting meditation as the cure. Meditation is still practiced widely in the monasteries located in the Himalayas where Buddhist monks and lamas practice meditation in large scale and try to find “Moksha” which is the Buddhist concept for ultimate peace which they consider their god.

Due to large number of people adopting meditation techniques to relieve themselves from the stress of their regular routine work, find inner peace and beauty and have the sense of freedom, even the cities have tried to replicated the environment of the monasteries and they offer yoga practices and meditation practices to people. By practicing meditation, the people from all age groups have benefited largely in their daily lives. The impact of inner peace, which is a gift given by meditation, has been observed to affect the daily life of the people practicing it and they have grown more sober and serene than before.

The meditation is a minor part of the rich heritage of knowledge that is contained in the Vedas where these techniques are written in a systematic form. Along the inner peace, every person is given a unique word which acts as the carrier of the peace inside the body of the person practicing meditation. In order to reap most out of meditation, it is very important to perform meditation in a systematic and as per the rules as written in the Vedas.

Thus it is very important to be aware of the right meditation techniques as even though it doesn’t have any negative impact, but when doing the right way can give you more profit in terms of inner peace and beauty, then it is unwise to practice it other way and reap lesser benefits from the technique.

Usually the best time to practice meditation is mornings when the air is fresher than any other time of the year, but meditations are equally beneficial when performed with a calm quiet and peaceful environment away from noises and clean air. It can be performed in fairly sound proof air conditioned rooms of your apartment any time of the day given that the same time is maintained for everyday practice.

How To Meditate Properly Techniques

By

So you want to learn how to meditate properly? Well you have come to the right place. Before I get into how to meditate, I want to talk a little about what meditation is.

What is Meditation?

If you are not familiar with meditation, you may be confused about what it really is. Meditation is simply “awareness”. What is awareness? It is a state where you are completely present in the moment. Being present means you are not thinking about the past and not thinking about the future. All that exists is this very moment, right now. In this state, you can reach higher levels of consciousness and an increase in clarity of mind.

You are not your thoughts. We believe we are what we think, because we associated who we are with what we are thinking. But to meditate is to separate yourself from your thoughts. You simply become “the watcher”. During meditation, you are observing your thoughts. This is how you will reach a state of “no mind”, that is, you are in a state of thoughtless awareness.

Why Meditate? What are the Benefits?

Meditation has many benefits. Your mind, body, and soul are connected. A change in one will affect the other. Meditation will help clear your mind of useless thoughts and clutter. You will find you will have a more sense of clarity as you go about your daily activities. You will also find you will feel more grounded in this world and more calm. Meditation also helps you become happier and loving. All the negative emotions you attach to things that have happened in the past and all the negative emotions you attach to potential things that could happen in the future are decreased, and sometimes completely eliminated. Meditation teaches you to detach from your thoughts, so naturally you will detach from stressful thoughts. A decrease in stress will help with stress related illness such as heart disease and high blood pressure.

Beyond all the benefits listed above, meditation is a time for your to relax simply just be. It is time for you to appreciate yourself, life, and embrace a higher being.

Anyone can do and benefit from meditation. You do not have to be religious or have a god to benefit from meditation. Meditation is for anyone who wants to live a better and more stress free life.

How To Meditate Properly?

Easy steps for how to meditate properly.

    1. You will want to find a quiet and comfortable place to sit down. You can sit down anywhere, on the floor or on the chair. Your back must be straight. People say you shouldn’t lie down because it’s an easy way to fall asleep. If you can get away with it then you can lie down if you wish.
    1. Breath normally. In and out. Pay attention to your breath. Focus on the air coming in through your nose, into your lungs, and back out. Focusing on your breath keeps your mind away from focusing on all the thoughts swirling in your mind.
    1. You will notice many many thoughts coming in and out. The key here is to let them be. Do not push them away or hold on to them. Do not try and interpret them or make sense of them. Simply allow them to arise and go away as they do. You are the watcher. You are simply watching these thoughts. As time goes by, these thoughts will subside slowly…… and eventually, you will have reached a state of “no mind”, where you have no thoughts. This is the blissful meditative state.
  1. That’s it! Easy and simple meditation.

Tips on How To Meditate Properly

  • Meditate for at least 20 minutes a day. It can take 10 minutes or more to quiet your mind.
